What is THC Distillate?

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) distillate is a runny translucent oil rich in refined cannabinoids, terpenoids, and flavonoids. Chemists can extract each cannabinoid easily through distillation due to the different boiling points of each cannabinoid. THC distillate is polished to remove all unnecessary stuff, such as pesticides, plant matter, or other impurities, thus ensuring high purity, clarity, and potency. The resulting distillate contains only the purest THC and CBD molecules.

THC distillate can be consumed via vaporization in a distillate cartridge, dab rig, or vape pen. You can also infuse it as an ingredient in cannabis topicals or edibles. The advantages of using THC distillate compared to other ways of using the hemp plant are numerous, as we will see further in the article.

What is Weed Distillate?

Since the legalization of weed in Canada on October 17, 2018, many people have embarked on weed growth indoors or outdoors. Either way, the weed obtained can be used in several ways, including obtaining weed distillate.

But what is weed distillate? Cannabis distillate is the final product obtained after the cannabis plant has been stripped of all unimportant hemp plant material, leaving only the finest cannabis oil, which is almost 100% pure.

Winterisation removes the Hemp plant’s oils, waxes, and lipids. However, a small percentage of terpenes, cannabinoids, and fats remain, where distillation comes into play. The distillation process is aimed at removing terpenes, and increasing purity, potency, and volatility.

A much lower temperature is needed to convert the undesirable compounds into gas. The vacuum pump then pumps these gases to be collected first. The remaining molecules of THC and CBD have a higher boiling point; hence they are left behind to be collected. This final product consists of 99% pure THC or CBD oil

The colour of this distillate depends on several factors, such as refinement methods, growth conditions, and extraction. The distillate can appear as pompous, highly viscous golden liquid or glassy solid slabs.

Despite its high potency, cannabis distillate lacks flavour, taste, or aroma and can be used even for medical purposes. This feature makes it perfect for infusing it with other cannabis products, such as cannabis edibles. The distillate has also been stripped of carboxylic acid and hence is less volatile and can be consumable using a vape pen.

Difference Between THC Distillate and CBD Distillate

Although the extraction process is the same, there is a considerable difference in the structure and the uses of THC and CBD. However, they both have no taste, aroma, or flavour. Both THC and CBD are legal in Canada.

THC Distillate

THC distillate is mainly for high-tolerance users and medical marijuana patients. Cannabis distillate boasts a high concentration of intoxicating THC, which brings about a “high” feeling. THC is also psychotropic. It can treat pain, glaucoma, low appetite, nausea, and anxiety.

CBD Distillate

Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD, is the opposite of THC. CBD is a non-intoxicative and offers a more subdued feeling than THC. in short, CBD contains all the wellness benefits of the cannabis plant, only without the high.

CBD has been used over the years to help treat seizures, pain, nausea, depression, anxiety, and migraines.

Difference Between Distillate and Isolate

The distillate is a purified extract used to make an isolate. A distillate is a natural extract made to undergo the distillation process. The resulting distillate is usually highly concentrated.

On the other hand, an isolate is the purest form of CBD and contains none of the compounds found in the hemp plant, such as terpenes, flavonoids, etc. The Isolate is created from a natural extraction process that uses CBD distillate and eliminates the flavour and aroma of the hemp plant. The Isolate is commonly found in the market as a powder.

How Is Cannabis Distillate Made?

How Is Cannabis Distillate Made?

The creation of cannabis distillate is a multi-step process that involves several technical processes.

Here are the steps involved in weed distillation as follows.

1. Extraction

Extraction is the first step and involves several multi-steps, such as careful cannabis flower drying and proper curing after harvest. Once dry, the trichomes, which contain the highest number of cannabinoid concentrations, are separated from the plant.

This separation process uses a range of solvents, such as ethanol or carbon dioxide. The oils then flow to the collection tanks.

2. Winterization

Even after using solvents in extraction, the end result is not entirely pure crude oil. Several impurities, such as chlorophyll, cannabinoids, and lipids, still linger.

The chemists use the winterization process to remove unwanted lipids and waxes. First, the crude oil is mixed with ethanol and stored in cold temperatures for around 48 hours to harden the lipids, which are then filtered out.

The resulting cannabis extract may then be decarboxylated to activate the acidic cannabinoids and enhance their interaction with the human body.

3. Distillation process

The process is much similar to other distillation processes. However, they use varying vacuum pressures and temperature control, and the cannabis oils flow, leaving the desired cannabinoid.

Distillation equipment is used to purify the desired cannabinoid to its lowest boiling point, from where it can be collected without degrading the oil. The cannabinoid is then condensed back to liquid.

Ethanol and carbon dioxide are removed using fractional distillation techniques. The resulting viscous liquid is the highly potent THC and is almost 100% pure.

How is THC Distillate Used?

How is THC Distillate Used?

THC distillate is highly versatile and can be incorporated in any way the user feels comfortable using it. For example, yummy cookies can be prepared using THC oil

Weed can also be vaporized using vape pens or dab rigs. Several topicals are also available to choose from for those who like taking THC through the skin.

The benefits of THC distillate are psychotropic and valuable in treating pain, glaucoma, insomnia, low appetite, and anxiety.

THC is also potent and almost 100% pure.

The obtained THC can be used in various ways, such as baking, using it on the skin, and vaping, among other methods.
