Standard brownies are a delicious, gooey chocolate dessert loved by people of all ages. So is anyone surprised that pot brownies are equally famous amongst the cannabis community? Special brownies have been a classic stoner favourite for decades. These tasty treats are available at most modern dispensaries, but they’re also easy to make at home. Learn how to make weed brownies so you can customize this dessert to your tastes and preferences.
First Things First
Before we dive into how to make pot brownies, there are a few decisions to handle. A little planning now will make the baking process smooth and easy.
Dosage
It’s essential to figure out the dosages when making marijuana brownies or any other weed edibles. Dosing can be tricky when you’re eating weed instead of smoking it. Consuming too much can cause a horrible trip, so it’s always important to gauge your amount.
When deciding on dosages, consider a few factors. Is your bud THC or CBD dominant? You should also research what terpenes are present, as well as the source and quality of your marijuana. All of these elements impact how potent your brownies will be.
Decarbing
Decarbing your weed is a vital step in how to make weed brownies. Decarboxylation is the process that activates the cannabinoids in your flower. When marijuana is heated, this converts THCa into THC and CBDa into CBD. If you don’t decarb your weed, you won’t notice any psychoactive or other effects—in other words, you won’t get high from it.
Infusion Agent
After you decarb your marijuana, you have some choices for how to infuse the goodness of the plant into food. Cooking fats such as butter or oil are ideal, but some people prefer to infuse sugar instead. A commercial cannabis concentrate is another option.
Cannabutter or Cannaoil
Lots of home bakers turn to cannabutter or canna-oil because it’s easy to prepare and store. Look for cannabutter at your local weed dispensary, or get crafty and make your own.
Prepare cannabutter by heating butter and cannabis on the stovetop for 45 minutes up to 4 hours. Once cooled, you can use the cannabutter as you would standard butter in any recipe.
Cannaoil is also simple to make using a similar method. Heat olive oil or coconut oil in a double boiler, along with decarbed marijuana. You can let the mixture infuse for 30 minutes up to 4 hours.
Cannasugar
Infused cannabis sugar is another excellent choice for baking unique desserts. Unfortunately, Cannasugar can be hard to find in stores, so we recommend making your own. Another benefit to making cannasugar is that you can use it in place of regular sugar in any recipe.
Cannabis Concentrate
Concentrates are potent canna-oil and cut down on your prep time, but they can get expensive. If you want to go this route, pick up your favourite concentrate from your local weed shop. Shatter, crumble, amber, wax, and other concentrates are ideal for making brownies. Simply warm up your concentrate to decarb it, then mix it with standard butter or oil when you start cooking.
Decarbed Weed
Using decarbed weed will work if you know how to make pot brownies without spending lots of time in the kitchen. However, we recommend using one of the other options if you have a choice. Adding dried cannabis directly to your brownie mix results in a brownie with lots of seeds, stems, and other debris. However, if you’re in a rush, you can cook with decarbed weed. We recommend grinding it as finely as possible as well as adding nuts to the mix.
What To Expect From Marijuana Brownies
Before we dive into how to make weed brownies, let’s make sure we’re all on the same page about what to expect. THC edibles, such as THC gummies and brownies, take a long time to start working, especially compared to fast methods like smoking. Expect to wait 30 minutes to an hour before you feel anything. Don’t be tempted to take another dose if you don’t feel anything right away. Everyone’s body receptors are unique, so you might not have the same experience as your friends. Just be patient and take it slow.
Ingredients
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon baking powder
- ½ cup cannabutter or cannaoil
- 1 cup white sugar or cannasugar
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon nuts or raisins (optional)
OR
- A brownie premix
- Required ingredients listed on the box
Recipe
- Preheat your oven to 175°C.
- Grease an 8-inch baking pan.
- Combine the dry ingredients in a medium bowl. This will be the flour, baking powder, salt, and cocoa powder. If you’re using decarbed weed, add it to the dry ingredients.
- Cream the cannabutter or oil with the white sugar and brown sugar in a separate bowl. This means combining the ingredients until the fat and sugar are evenly blended into a creamy paste. A mixer will make this process easier, but you can learn how to make weed brownies using a potato masher or fork as well.
- Add the eggs and vanilla extract to your sugar mixture, blending until smooth.
- Mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, adding about 1/3 of the dry ingredients at a time. Blend until you have a smooth, even batter without any lumps.
- Pour the brownie batter into the baking pan. Gently shake the pan and tap it on the countertop to remove any air bubbles from the mix.
- Optionally, add nuts or raisins to the top of your mix.
- Bake your brownies for 25-30 minutes or until the surface is cracked and the edges start to pull away from the pan. You can test your brownies with a toothpick, but since brownies are gooier than cakes, the toothpick won’t be clean when the brownies are done.
- Cool the pan on a rack.
- Cut up your brownie into even portions. You can enjoy one right away or store your brownies in a cool, dry place out of the reach of children.
